Why Verify a GSTIN?

Before entering any business transaction, you must verify the supplier's GSTIN. An invoice from a cancelled or suspended GSTIN does NOT qualify for Input Tax Credit (ITC) — you could lose the entire ITC amount plus interest at 24%.

Rule 36(4) already limits ITC to 120% of GSTR-2B. Claiming ITC on invoices from invalid GSTINs pushes you further into risk. Always verify before the first transaction.

Method 1: GST Portal — Search Taxpayer

  1. Go to gst.gov.in → Services → User Services → Search Taxpayer
  2. Select "Search by GSTIN/UIN"
  3. Enter the 15-digit GSTIN and the captcha code
  4. Click Search

The result shows: Legal Name, Trade Name, Registration Date, Taxpayer Type, Status (Active/Cancelled/Suspended), and State Jurisdiction.

Method 2: Search by PAN

If you only know the PAN, use the "Search by PAN" tab on the same page. This shows ALL GSTINs registered under that PAN across all states — useful when a supplier has multiple branches.

What Each Status Means

StatusMeaningCan You Claim ITC?
ActiveGSTIN is valid, returns are being filed✅ Yes — if filing is up to date
CancelledRegistration terminated (voluntary or suo-moto)❌ No — invoices after cancellation are invalid
SuspendedTemporarily blocked (usually for non-compliance)❌ No — treat like cancelled until reinstated
Cancelled Suo-MotoCancelled by officer for non-filing❌ No — supplier may face legal action

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Recently cancelled: Supplier shows Active on the portal but was cancelled 2 months ago? Could be a fake GSTIN. Always re-verify before large transactions.
  • Mismatched trade name: The trade name on the invoice doesn't match what the portal shows — possible GSTIN misuse.
  • Different state: Supplier claims to be in Maharashtra but GSTIN state code shows 07 (Delhi) — definite red flag.

GSTIN Format — Quick Validation

A valid GSTIN is always 15 characters: State Code (2 digits) + PAN (10 characters) + Entity Number (1 digit) + "Z" (fixed) + Check Digit (1). Example: 27AABCT1234A1Z5 — state 27 = Maharashtra, PAN = AABCT1234A.
